Soybean Genesis Leaders in Pierre
The Soybean Genesis Leaders Program, sponsored by the SD Soybean Checkoff and presented by SDARL, had a State Government seminar in Pierre on February 2 and 3, 2026.
Class members had a close look at state government and the legislative process. The seminar began on February 2 with lunch and a discussion of current bills and legislative issues with leaders from South Dakota Soybean and the South Dakota Pork Producers Council. Later the group went to the Capitol to view the House and Senate in session, and heard from registered lobbyists about the importance of trust when interacting with legislators. The evening was a chance to network with ag groups and leaders from all over the state during the AgFest social.
Next up on February 3 was observation of legislative committee hearings. The Genesis Leaders sat in on both the House and Senate Ag and Natural Resources committees and learned more about bills affecting zebra mussel management and cultivated proteins. Representative Drew Peterson (R-19), a member of Class 1 of the Soybean Genesis program, and Senator Brandon Wipf (R-22), then met with the group for a discussion about agricultural leadership in the the state legislature, encouraging class members to consider running for office. Next the class met with Governor Larry Rhoden, touching on current ag issues and the importance of leadership.
The Genesis Leaders group had an excellent experience in Pierre and a unique opportunity to meet with a variety of people who work together to address the issues affecting the ag economy in South Dakota.
The final seminar for Soybean Genesis Leaders will be in Mitchell on Mar. 9, with a focus on leadership readiness and a graduation ceremony.
