Soybean Genesis Leaders program concludes at High Plains Processing

Class 5 of the South Dakota Soybean Genesis Leaders program gathered for a day of learning, connection, and celebration at their fourth and final session near Mitchell, SD, on March 9, 2026. The program brought together industry experts and soybean leaders to explore the future of the soybean industry while focusing on the leadership readiness of the graduating cohort.

The program featured several speakers offering perspectives on leadership and the soybean industry at both global and regional levels.

  • Dawn Scheier (SDARL Class V) shared insights on global soybean leadership, highlighting how international markets, trade dynamics, and agricultural innovation are shaping the future of soybean production and demand.

  • Bruce Haines continued the conversation with a discussion on soybean leadership, focusing on the importance of producer voices, strategic industry partnerships, and strong leadership within agricultural organizations.

  • Jeff Kloucek led a session on Leadership in Action, sharing real-world examples of how strong leadership can influence communities, industries, and organizations.

The afternoon included a High Plains Processing update and plant tour, offering a behind-the-scenes look at soybean crush processing, with information provided by Pat Gathman, General Manager; Chelsie Bickel, Crush Manager; and Brandon Hope (SDARL Class XI), South Dakota Soybean Processors Board President. The tour and discussion highlighted the role of value-added processing in strengthening South Dakota agriculture and creating new market opportunities for soybean producers.

Participants then engaged in a leadership development activity focused on goal setting and next steps. This interactive session encouraged participants to reflect on their leadership growth and identify how they will apply their experience moving forward in their communities and careers. The day concluded with the graduation ceremony, recognizing the achievements of the cohort and celebrating their commitment to leadership in agriculture and rural communities.

Events like this highlight the strength of South Dakota’s agricultural leadership community by bringing together producers, industry professionals, and emerging leaders to learn from one another and build a stronger future for rural South Dakota.
